Wing Chun

Wing Chun offers a complete system of self defense which has its origins in the Shaolin Temple of the Honan province in China. At Shaolin many of the “animal styles” of kung fu were taught including snake, tiger, crane, etc. Some time during the 16th century the temple was destroyed by the ruling Manchu government and only five temple members managed to escape. One of them, a nun named Ng Mui, survived and through her eventually evolved the system which became known as Wing Chun.

Since the Wing Chun style was originally developed by a woman, its effectiveness is based on mobility, speed, economy of movement and accuracy rather than brute strength. Attacks occur rapidly in an unrelenting series of short fast punches and kicks while defensive movements minimize the motion required to deflect a blow and provide an opportunity for counter attack.

Wing Chun is known to be a simple but effective fighting style. The basic premise being that if something didn’t work in real combat it was not kept in the system.  The central theory of Wing Chun is based on the “center line” of the body. Drawing a line vertically through a standing person all attacks are aimed at this area and all defenses are set to protect it. Wing Chun uses a straight forward combination of punches, kicks, blocks and arm/leg traps to keep the system simple yet complete.

The Red Lotus School teaches the Wing Chun system as passed down from Grand Master Yip Man including all the basic forms (Siu Lim Tao, Chum Kil and Bil Jee) as well as the “wooden man”, two-person sparring techniques and use of the stick.

Internal meditation techniques are also an integral part of the training process at the Red Lotus School. The meditations are geared to enhance internal energy, concentration, sensitivity and overall awareness.
